It is good to know that NATO is having some impact, especially since we know Turkey is sympathetic to Russia's military operation. Ukrainians and their President will go down in history as defenders of freedom and democracy. I saw the photo of Snake Island and bet Putin regrets his 'act of goodwill' by surrendering it now that the Ukrainians have launched the Ukrainian flag and marking it as a symbol of their determination.

Following Ex Libris questions have emerged: Is Putin sane? What territories were historically part of the empire Putin wants to reclaim? My source is: 'Ukraine:Putin isn't mad- he's following a long established great power playbook for conquest', pub. March 17, 2022 by Alexander Titov, Lecturer in modern European History, Queen's Uni Belfast. QUESTION OF RATIONALITY: deconstructuring the Russian leadership views.. Putin following a well established pattern. This is a case of history repeating itself. He is following "a toolkit of national appropriation that has been used the world over - from North America to Europe, the Middle East and Asia." " A great power nationalism and obsession with security has overridden any concerns for the economy and well being of its own and neighbouring people". Vladimir Putin's motives behind the invasion from speech made on Feb 22 (the Russian president's rationale behind a large-scale invasion of Ukraine)-: certain areas of modern Ukraine are "old age Russian lands"; historical closeness; strategic border- such claims used to appropriate territories by different countries across various historical periods. PUTIN'S CLAIMS: Russia and Ukraine are one people -" It (Feb 22 speech) facilitates Moscow's claims on Ukrainian territories as being essentially Russian and legitimises Russia's alleged right for a special sphere of infkuence there- if not an outright annexation." ('TO STRENGTHEN AN EMOTIONAL CLAIM ON A TERRITORY- ANCESTRAL POSSESSION FREQUENTLY USED'.) claiming common ancestry to the state of "Kievas Rus" as well as the common language and the same Orthodox religion serves as a powerful emotional device for a modern appropriation of territories in independent Ukraine that used to be part of the Russian empire and the Soviet Union. Claims re-inforced by by cultural and mnemonic links made via literature, culture, and celebration of important historical events. STRATEGIC SECURITY a common argument for control of "strategic" territories. STRATEGIC BORDER ARGUMENT: "...he talked about the encroachment of NATO via Ukraine towards Russia's borders as an existential threat. Dec 21 Putin claimed- " We simply have no room to retreat." PUTIN'S RATIONALITY: lives of many Russians lost and a far greater number of Ukrainians; Russian economy nearly ruined because of western sanctions; 3 decades of painful post Soviet economic reforms have been undone. Secret plan to Rule Europe. "Russia wants to reclaim and re-establish its power with the territories it held under the Soviet Union."

While the Russian military press on in Ukraine I hope Russian assets and the confiscated assets of Russian oligarchs ARE used to rebuild Ukraine, if and when Putin's war is ever over. I fear he will not stop with Ukraine, the KGB agent will continue his mission to restore the USSR until he is stopped.
