Scholzen And Macroner ~ Verbs Meaning To Fail To Keep Promises
Russia declares it seeks the reformation of the USSR
We all want world peace, and songs and books have been written about this over the centuries, but in truth, can it ever happen? While greed and a thirst for power exists in humanity, I doubt there will be true peace, but small pockets from time to time.
A war is on in Ukraine— not quite full-scale, but close, yet observers in their armchairs are content to pick at who is to blame. Outside of Ukraine, people blame Zelenskyy for not conceding land and ‘allowing’ people to die, mainly people who don’t want a world war, or their countries to use their money to give it to Ukraine. In a word, selfish people. There is war fatigue, where those who supported Ukraine as a bandwagon are tired and are feeling the effects with increased food and energy prices. They want their lives back to how it was, and feel their conscience is clear because they did support Ukraine.
Now we have the US saying that Ukraine is also to blame for not listening to them earlier. The problem with that cry (of apportioning blame) is that Ukraine simply did not have the funds to buy masses of weapons anyhow. Russia has been planning this for decades, while Ukraine has been struggling to establish a democracy free of Russian corruption. When the US entered the Second World War, they didn’t even have an air force (1941), and they didn’t have enough weapons either as they had only been making suffice quantities to sell to the European allies. They had to quickly finance the war, and made deals with manufacturers to work around the clock. Ukraine is a new state that is only 31 years old, and while the likes of Merkel stating that NATO membership was denied to allow them time to grow, what they needed was a hand to help them to grow, like a toddler learning to walk and run.
The Ukrainians want to fight, and they need to fight because Ukraine itself is in danger of becoming extinct. Russia has declared on more than one occasion that they believed the dissolution of the USSR was invalid, and all the former Soviet states left the USSR illegally and as such their sovereign status is unconstitutional.
War, and how it began and how it ends is always complicated. Many are saying that the result will be on the battlefield and ultimately it will be decided in an office after negotiations. That is how it should be these days but we have seen such agreements dismissed and ignored by the Russians, and the usual penalties such as sanctions are not effective.
The Russians now have a bargaining tool—by classifying foreign soldiers as mercenaries and to use them technically to hold the West hostage. The death penalty has been imposed in a pseudo court, and the Russians are blackmailing the West into withdrawing aid from Ukraine. The Russians also know that the people of the West can be selfish, and that politicians need to do the bidding of the electorate if they want to be voted in again. The British are different though, we do stand by our agreements, and the soldiers fought for the Ukrainian army knowing that they might die. All soldiers know that they might die in a war.
The British born soldiers (Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner) knew the risks they were taking, but are political prisoners being held by virtual terrorists instead of being held as prisoners of war. There might be a chance of a prisoner swap, but Russia desperately need to stop the West sending heavy weapons to Ukraine and this is their only leverage. We also knew that this was likely as soon as the soldiers were captured.
Europe is supposed to be united in their support for Ukraine, but the divisional cracks that have always existed are becoming more evident. The natives of France and Germany are not pleased with how their representatives are behaving regarding the Ukraine crisis, and have mocked their lack of honour. Verbs based on their names have been coined by the citizens of each country and those in Ukraine with their own translations. Scholz did try and save face for a while but it hasn’t worked, and Merkel throwing in her rubber ring to save herself has not made Germany look good at all.
Macron has been consistent—consistent at least but for all the wrong reasons as people will remember him as an eager mediator who failed, and was too arrogant to admit it where people have died as a result. We should be reminded of the Chamberlain and Churchill struggle during the Second World War, where Chamberlain pursued talks and to cede land to Hitler, and Churchill said no to both. Churchill had been a prisoner of war himself, and he knew faux talks would result in more deaths. That is what Macron is doing. Did his teacher not teach him what happened during the Second World War in France?
Emmanuel Macron-France.
Olaf Scholz - Germany.
Scholzen/scholzed/scholzing - to put forward complicated and contradictory excuses that make no sense. Шольцить, (loosely translated as, to make a Scholz-like vow): To make a major promise you don't plan to fulfill.
Herumscholzen - blabbering without getting to the point and making no sense, avoiding answering the question, and making vague promises that you don’t intend to honour.
A Macron-call/Macronit/ Macroning/macroner/macronyism/ - to call and say nothing, to appear concerned about a situation but do nothing at all. Макронить, (loosely translated as, to make a Macron-call): To call and say absolutely nothing; to appear to be concerned about a situation and really do nothing at all.
War in Ukraine: "Stop macroner!", what does this expression which has become popular in the Ukrainian language mean? https://www.ladepeche.fr/2022/04/12/arrete-de-macroner-que-signifie-cette-expression-devenue-populaire-dans-la-langue-ukrainienne-10231820.php
(Translation) In Ukraine, a neologism has appeared in everyday language: the verb "macroner". On the spot, some Ukrainians point the finger at the French president, accused of not keeping his promises in the conflict.
Would French President Emmanuel Macron be mocked in Ukraine? While the population is expecting a particularly strong offensive from Russia in the east of the country, part of the Ukrainian people have the feeling of being abandoned by France and its head of state. The Ukrainian language has adopted a neologism in the image of this anger: as Le Parisien explains , Ukrainians now use the term "macronete" (which can be translated as "macroner" in the language of Molière). An expression has even emerged: "Stop macroner!", Many Ukrainians expressed themselves.
Over the past few days, the Russians have not been shy about telling the world that they seek to reunite the USSR. The former Soviet states always knew that Russia would make such an attempt (hence why many quickly formed alliances to join NATO and the EU for protection), and that day has come.
Sweden and Finland have had veiled threats (Russia invaded Finland in 1939 and the Finns were forced to cede land for peace) when they announced they wished to join NATO, Estonia’s land has been mentioned as a land that Russia seeks to reclaim, while Moldova has a pro-Russian breakaway group on the border with Ukraine, the country that Russia is eager to reclaim in full. The latest is that the Russian parliament is claiming Lithuania’s Declaration of Independence was unconstitutional, therefore, it is not a sovereign state.
The world should be concerned about the brazen statements, and the fact that Russia is willing to behave like terrorists who ignore all international laws and treaties. What good are all these international alliances if they do not deter war, and have no power to enforce peace?
Day 108 (11 June)
War crimes prosecutors in Ukraine are documenting more than 16,000 cases of alleged war crimes. Ukraine only had 23 qualified people to do the job, and others have been delegated to carry out the tasks and learn on the job. It included exhuming bodies, examining them and then taking them to the morgue for evidence. There are other details that are necessary, such as if they were killed in a residential block, or in a military facility where the latter is considered a legitimate target under warfare. If the area was occupied by Russians, was it a Ukrainian missile that struck the fatal blow? If so, then it is not a war crime but a tragic casualty of war.
The task has been aided by the ICC (who only have powers to investigate) and other countries have sent experts to assist, but it is hard to document crimes in a war zone. Accuracy is needed in order to prosecute, and the likelihood then many of the perpetrators will have died in battle or fled back to Russia making them untouchable.
In occupied territories, old Russian passports have been found as Russia begins to issue Russian passports to those who wish to be Russian citizens. That is the official line, however, there might be coercion where Ukrainian documents might be taken and swapped. We know when Ukrainian prisoners of war were taken, they were issued with documents that altered their names in Russian.
The US have stated that Ukraine did not listen to them back in November 2021, telling them that an invasion was imminent. I’m not sure that is true, because all of Ukraine knew that since Crimea was annexed in 2014, Russia was waiting to pounce again. Some European countries didn’t believe the US intelligence either, but since then we have discovered a number of Ukrainian traitors who had infiltrated the Secret Service in Ukraine and government positions, who might have falsified information, or hidden it, therefore giving Russia the advantage.
We should also look at France and Germany who had been mediators in the Minsk Failures, and who again failed when they tried to negotiate with Putin. In truth, what could have Ukraine done prior to the invasion other than to evacuate the entire country? They did not have enough weapons, and still don’t even with the donations from around the world. They did not know that there were traitors in the Secret Service who were handing Russia information, and who allowed the occupation of some regions.
If US intelligence was proven correct as it was, and they knew about it beforehand, then why did they hesitate to send weapons to aid Ukraine? It took them 6 weeks before the sent anything other than humanitarian aid for fear of escalation. If they had the intelligence supporting the kind of attacks that we had seen, then they dragged their feet when they should have been ready with an arsenal of weapons to be sent instead. To me, it looks like the US are trying to ‘blame’ Ukraine here for not doing more or being prepared, however, they can’t magic weapons out of thin air, or recruit and train more troops within weeks. Having read many accounts from Ukrainians who fled, they have all said they knew that day would come and they were mentally prepared for it. Even Zelenskyy knew it would come, but Russia has been planning this for years.
Another traitor who betrayed Ukraine has been found. Andriy Naumov was said to have been caught fleeing Ukraine on 23 February 2022, with a driver, a German citizen, €600,000, jewels and US dollars. He had been the head of internal security department of the Security Services. With traitors like this, Ukraine had been betrayed with their doors left open for the Russians by the people who had been entrusted to protect the country.
Ukraine’s EU membership application has always been an issue, with those who believe it should be granted, and those who think there should be no exceptions made for them The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Ukraine to discuss EU membership and how Ukraine will be rebuilt. A little premature perhaps right now, seeing that Russia has declared that it has a right to reclaim all former Soviet states.
Why do some countries silently oppose this? Most of them do not want their contributions going to Ukraine, and feel that it will be a drain on resources. Some of the smaller countries like Hungary benefit more from the EU (as in they get more in grants than they contribute to the EU), and that would end if Ukraine and Moldova joined, or their funding would be reduced greatly.
Others like France want control of the EU, and because it is a political alliance as well as a trading and one now these days, and they fear the floodgates may open by making exceptions. As it is, the EU has always been divided and not only because the UK opposed the direction the EU was taking, but each member state seeks influence and power within the alliance for their own benefit. The Greek bailout in 2010 sounded alarm bells for many wondering how they fudged the figures to get into the EU, but they were not the only country to have done so (Italy and Cyprus off the top of my head have been guilty of fudging).
The simplicity basic and initial premise of the EEC before it became the EU, was to help and support other European countries by reducing the trade barriers, and to work together to benefit the continent as a whole. That basic premise seemed ideal, for what was there to lose? Things got messy when the alliance grew and other organs developed beyond the original aims, and political powers began to be ad odds with each other as expected for each country was a sovereign state. The EU courts ended that unique sovereignty, and members states had to abide by the EU laws and consensus. That is why there is a constant tug of power in the EU, and Macron (France) is eager to dominate the EU now that the UK has left. Having Scholz (Germany) as his sidekick means that France and Germany will dominate EU doctrines (as they are the most powerful countries in the EU) and policies.
The OSCE SMM (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine ) has been criticized after a report claims that they failed in their mission, and also were negligent in leaving behind documents that revealed sensitive information that fell into the hands of the Russians. That information was used against the Ukrainians and led to some deaths. https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine
The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) was deployed on 21 March 2014, following a request to the OSCE by Ukraine’s government and a consensus decision by all 57 OSCE participating States. The SMM is an unarmed, civilian mission, present on the ground 24/7 in all regions of Ukraine. Its main tasks are to observe and report in an impartial and objective way on the situation in Ukraine; and to facilitate dialogue among all parties to the crisis.
The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission mandate expired on 31 March 2022
While it was an unarmed and a civilian mission, their remit was to observe and report, prevent conflict, and to engage in dialogue to resolve issues. It is clear it was wholly ineffective and failed, and Ukraine had relied on the OSCE to forewarn them of tensions and escalation. Monitors had been sent to Kherson, Odessa, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Chernivtsi, and Luhansk, yet all os these regions have been attacked, some destroyed, and other occupied. We also know that there were/are traitors in the regional governmental bodies, so how did these observers miss all the signs?
Concerns continue in occupied Kherson where remaining residents are being filtered to decide who should be detained, tortured or killed. There is more talk of a sham referendum being held to ‘prove’ that the residents wish to be part of the Russian Federation. Those who claim to want to be part of Russia believe that their lives will be better under Russian rule. It is hard to see or to understand how they think things can be better when they see dead bodies in the street, and people being attacked and detained for expressing their views.
Oh, brilliant and bitter wordplay, EL, well-done! TC
I have read at least half and based on that want to quote and leave with the quote because I think the question you pose is critical to our future. I know you discuss criticisms of the Ukraine from the US and the expectation of the USSR reclaiming territory, however, this quote needs to stand alone and I hope it generates conversations. "The world should be concerned about the brazen statements, and the fact that Russia is willing to behave like terrorists who ignore all international laws and treaties. What good are all these international alliances if they do not deter war, and have no power to enforce peace?"
