I’ve been monitoring the news on the proposed peace deal put forward by the US, and the Americans are now showing their true colours, that is the current US administration. They have forced Ukraine to accept their peace deal by stopping all aid, and by stopping the sharing on military intelligence that should not be contingent on any negotiations.
Russia only accepted part of the peace deal, and agreed to ceasefire only on the energy infrastructure which is pretty pointless as 80% has been destroyed already. As usual, Russia could not be trusted and they bombed energy infrastructure 3 days later and Ukraine returned fire
.
The US special envoy Steve Witkoff, stated in an interview that Ukraine must cede the Russian occupied territories, and claimed that those regions wanted to become Russian because they had held referendums there. He seems to be spouting Russian propaganda and that is a concern as we all known the referendums are rigged and people were forced to vote with guns pointing at them, but this also shows the world that the current US government cannot be trusted to defend Ukraine when they say that Putin is a trustworthy and good man. He’s just ignored the ceasefire agreement already and refuse to criticise Putin. Perhaps it’s because Russia said they will help the US acquire Greenland, because Trump covets it claiming the US needs it for national defence purposes.
Then we have the ‘coalition of the willing’ that Starmer is trying to create, but he is no leader, where at least Macron understands what is going on and is one of the few world leaders that has been around since the invasion in 2022. Many countries have changed leaders and their position in aiding Ukraine since then, but there is a problem, because NATO looks weak. With the US stating that if there is a war in Europe, they won’t get involved, and with remaining US bases in Europe recalling a large number of personnel, other NATO countries need to step up immediately.
The US, Ukraine and Russia have all had meetings over the past couple of weeks and we have not been privy to them for obvious reasons, but from what the Americans have stated publicly, and with the turn with their UN votes, it’s clear that the US is for now a country that cannot be relied upon for support against Russia. When you have a US envoy claiming that Ukraine isn’t a ‘real country’ and Russia was taking back what was theirs, the red flags need to be hoisted up high for all to see and acknowledge, that the current US administration is pro-Kremlin and this is not in the best interests of Ukraine, although it is claimed that the US will provide weapons to help Ukraine to continue to defend itself.
The problem I see here is that these are words, and we do not know if any weapons have actually been delivered to Ukraine since Trump took office. Other countries are hesitant to criticise the US, but it is clear that Trump wants the war to end regardless of what Ukraine wants, and he wants Ukraine to pay back the $100 billion in aid that has been given in the form of minerals from Ukraine.
A ceasefire is just an agreement on paper that isn’t enforceable, and history tells us that all ceasefires fail, and the fact that the ceasefire lasted barely 48 hours means that Putin has no intention of honouring any agreement. Ukraine on the other hand had to agree to the ceasefire in order to regain military intelligence from the US, and that is more valuable than anything right now.
Back in Europe, world leaders are building their defences and providing NATO troops to defend borderlines with Russia, and they must accept that the US may withdraw from NATO, because they have stated they don’t see the point of their money being wasted, and at the very least, they will withdraw troops and reduce spending.
Russia’s idea of negotiating is tell people what they want and that’s it. As part of their peace plan, they don’t accept any NATO peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, Ukraine must never join NATO, the occupied regions will become part of the Russian Federation, and the US and Europe must stop supplying military aid to Ukraine. That’s just for starters, so you can see, their idea of a peace deal is for Ukraine to surrender and to ban bordering NATO countries to hold defence lines. I’m not sure if this is worse than in 2022, when fewer areas had been annexed but at least the US administration was supportive, even if they were hesitant in providing aid.
These peace deal talks are a game, and Zelenskyy knows that Putin will not adhere to what is agreed, but he is being cornered by the Americans, who I don’t think will provide the military aid Ukraine needs. They may say they will, but remember it took 8 months to send outdated tanks to Ukraine, and a year before they agreed on the F-16s. Putin too knows it is a game, but because he is ‘friendly’ with Trump, he knows that he can get away with twisting words and circumventing any agreement too.
For us mere mortals, we are sort of sitting here waiting to see when or if World War III will happen, and without the support of the US. The US isn’t helping itself either by declaring it wishes to take Canada as the 51st state, and with a new Prime Minister too (Mark Carney) the US is becoming isolated from the democratic countries in the world. People have been warned not to fly into the US with ICE deporting and detaining people who fit a particular description, and even green card holders have been detained upon arriving back in the US. Add to this the tariff wars going on, the world is heading for a recession (and in the UK with all the new taxes to be implemented in April), with many businesses choosing to close down rather than struggle to make money to pay more taxes, around the world, people are encouraged not to support US firms, and Canada has effectively stopped importing US goods in defiance of the 51st state claim. The fact that US officials are citing statements that aren’t factual should be of concern not only to the people of the US, but also everyone around the world.
The peace talks and summits with world leaders leave the current situation in limbo, where Ukraine has the support of most of Europe (bar Hungary and Slovakia), and the US is saying one thing, doing another, and then saying something different the next day. They need to pick a side, either Russia or Ukraine, and it looks like they prefer to deal with Putin than Zelenskyy, even though Putin won his power through rigged elections and killing off his opponents, while Zelenskyy won the election in Ukraine fair and square. The fate of Ukraine is now in the hands of Europe, mainly the UK, France and Germany to try and formulate defences equal to that of the US and as fast as possible.
Day 1109 (9 Mar)
Elon Musk makes a public attack at the Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski when there had been threats to suspend the Starlink service that aids Ukrainian troops to plan their attacks. Musk claimed that without Starlinks, Ukraine would have lost the war, and Poland states that it pays $50 million for Starlink services for Ukraine. Since then, countries have been seeking an alternative to Starlink should the service cease suddenly
.
Day 1110 (10 Mar)
Ukraine launches a large drone attack in Moscow, where at least one person was killed and several were injured, forcing 4 Moscow airports to be closed.
Talks are held in Saudi Arabia between Ukraine and the US.
Warren Buffett's son Howard gives $500 million to Ukraine and states that it is a mistake by the US for halting it support to Ukraine.
Day 1111( 11 Mar)
Ukraine has stated it will accept an initial 30 day ceasefire in order for intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine to be restored. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has said that the ball is now in the court of the Russians and that the offer is for a complete ceasefire to stop the shooting.
The ceasefire proposal states that the 30 days will allow for negotiations to begin to end the war.
Putin visits Kursk before the US and Russian talks in Saudi Arabia. The US special envoy Steve Witkoff is to attend talks in Moscow for a proposed ceasefire plan
Day 1112 (12 Mar)
Ukraine loses territory in Kursk as the Russians retake territory, making it more difficult for Ukraine to use this as a bargaining chip for annexed regions in Ukraine.
Russia has yet comment on the proposed a 30 day ceasefire agreed by Ukraine and the US as it prepares to hold talks with the US. The US has stated that if Russia does not agree to the ceasefire there would be penalties in the form of sanctions.
France says 15 countries could give Ukraine security guarantees that would cover areas in the black sea, nuclear power stations and possibly the air. Macron said that it is complex and these areas need to be divided up between the count. Much depends on whether Russia accepts the 30 day ceasefire and the countries will then have to figure out a structure for the security framework.
In the UK, a Russian diplomat and their spouse has been expelled from the country in retaliation to a similar action in Moscow. The foreign office said it will not stand for intimidation of British Embassy staff, where they were falsely accused to justify harassment and intimidation.
In Paris, defence ministers from the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Poland meet to discuss boosting European defences and security for Ukraine.
The terms of the ceasefire are;
The United States will immediately lift the paws on intelligent sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine.
Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate interim 30 day seat fire which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian federation. The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace.
Both delegations agreed to name their negotiating teams and immediately begin negotiations towards an enduring piece that provides for Ukraine's long-term security. The United States committed to discussing these specific proposals with representatives from Russia the Ukrainian delegation reiterated that European partners shall be involved in the peace process.
Day 1113 (13 Mar)
Putin claims that Russia is in the final stage of reclaiming Kursk and driving out the Ukrainians. Ukraine has admitted that some of its troops were withdrawing from Kursk, but Russian reports claim that Ukrainian troops are in encircled, and despite intelligence from the CIA, Trump has chosen to favour the Russian version of events claiming that Ukrainian troops are in circled and asked Russia to be merciful.
Putin agrees to the 30 day ceasefire proposal but only to stop attacks on energy infrastructure and not on the frontline in the Donbas. He also has demanded guarantees that Ukraine will not receive any further aid from the US or Europe. One can say that it's not really an agreement to the proposal but a partial one and one that actually makes very little difference considering 80% of the energy infrastructure in Ukraine has already been destroyed.
Zelenskyy commented afterwards that Russia seeks to prolong the war after the Russian response to the proposed ceasefire. However, the Russian response is not unexpected as it's clear that Russia does not seek peace but seeks to acquire land in Ukraine and to hold it.
Day 1114 (14 Mar)
Countries around the world have called on Canada and Greenland to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, where a NATO member state perceives a threat to their security, political independence or territorial integrity after Trump has repeated claims that the US will seek to acquire Greenland as part of the US and Canada is the 51st state in America. This comes as other countries such as Russia and Iran have said that they would seek to assist the US in acquiring Greenland if necessary.
Ukraine and the US have finalised the draft agreement on mining earth minerals and are seeking a date to sign the document, but the US has not decided on the date and final terms of the document
Day 1115 (15 Mar)
Portugal considers cancelling F-35 purchases from the US due to a lack of reliability, and Canada may follow suit and cancel US maid fighter jets.
Starmer is to hold a virtual coalition of the willing summit with 25 leaders from Europe, the EU commission, NATO, Ukraine, and Canada. The US has not been included as the summit is to find a way to replace the lost US support.
Day 1116 (16 Mar)
Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy for Ukraine and Russia has been removed from attending peace talks as Russia has complained that he was pro Ukrainian.
Day 1117 (17 Mar)
The US Department of justice informed European officials that the US has withdrawn from the International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine (ICPA). The group that was formed in 2023 don't specifically to investigate and hold Russian leadership and its allies Belarus North Korea, and Iran accountable for war crimes against Ukraine. The loss of US support is damning not only in terms of finance but also the skill set. This further reaffirms the US position that it is supportive of Russia if they do not want to seek justice for the Ukrainian victims.
Day 1118 (18 Mar)
Trump holds a phone call with Putin, but there have been no reports as to what was discussed. The core lasted at least 90 minutes according to the White House.
It is now been a week since the US issued a proposal for a ceasefire that Ukraine had agreed to, yet Russia has not said yes to the proposals but that it is considering them.
Later in the day Putin agrees to halt strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days after the call with Trump. Ukraine has not commented on whether they will agree or have responded to the partial energy ceasefire offer.
Putin also said that a full ceasefire could only work if the Ukrainian allies stopped providing a military assistance, and this was a condition that the allies have rejected. Basically, Russia wants Ukraine to be defenceless so that when they attack again, they cannot defend themselves. It was also stated that the US must stop delivering weapons to Ukraine, however since Trump has been in power, it's very likely that there have been no deliveries made in any case.
Russia has claimed that Ukrainian forces try to launch offensive actions on the border of Belgorod.
Ukraine continues to defend itself and destroyed a command post of the Russian army near Demidovka in Belgorod.
Day 1119 (19 Mar)
Less than a day after Putin agreed to a partial 30 day ceasefire, Russia and Ukraine launched air attacks on each other’s infrastructure. The Russian targets included hospitals and energy infrastructure, effectively giving the US their response to the ceasefire proposals, thus he has rejected it. The Ukrainian drones targeted oil and gas facilities in Russia as per the norm.
Trump speaks to Zelensky by phone for an hour, but no details are released.
Russia tries to claim they have been open to discussions for peace by agreeing to hundreds of prisoners swaps. A further exchange of 175 prisoners of war were carried out between Ukraine and Russia.
European stolen competitor EUTELSAT says that they have complete coverage of Ukraine, and can replace Starlink should the US decide to halt the service.
Latvia has decided to partially close the Patarnieki border crossings with Belarus, and Grebnova and Terekhovo was Russia. Crossings will only be possible by car to heighten border security control.
During another interview, the US special invoice to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said that he believed Putin when he said Russia would not attack Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Less than 24 hours later putting attack Ukrainian energy and infrastructure.
Day 1120 (20 Mar)
Trump makes a suggestion that the US could run Ukrainian power plants as part of the discussion held with a Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy said in press conference in Norway that the nuclear power plants belong to the people of Ukraine and that they are state owned nuclear power plants, therefore it does not belong to Ukraine and it will not work for anybody. He also confirmed that there was no discussion of a change of ownership but was open to the US taking control of Zaporizhzhia that is currently under Russian control, to invest and modernise it.
Zelenskyy in turn said that if Russia violated the ceasefire terms, then Ukraine would retaliate.
Putin issues a decree requiring Ukrainian citizens in Russia to either leave or legalise themselves by 10th September 2025. This is for Ukrainian citizens who do not have legal grounds to remain in Russia.
Day 1121 (21 Mar)
A meeting of EU leaders is being held in London that will also be attended by Zelenskyy. Called the coalition of the willing the aim is to monitor peace efforts in Ukraine during the potential ceasefire where the peacekeeping troops would be called a ‘reassurance force’ instead. A present the coalition is called the Multinational Force Ukraine (MFU) and would provide Ukraine with air cover to keep the skies safe and a presence in the Black Sea to ensure safe trading.
It is estimated that about 20,000 troops would be necessary but this number would not be large enough to enforce peace but would serve as a deterrent mainly to protect cities ports and energy infrastructure. In order to appease the Russians there is a suggestion that the MFU will not operate in the Donbas region to show the Russians that there is no threat from the allies.
Day 1122 (22 Mar)
On Russian state television discussions are held where Russia is now offering Trump assistance to take Greenland, Canada and Ireland in exchange for helping Putin to destroy Ukraine
.
Day 1123 (23 Mar)
Russia attacks Kyiv leaving 3 dead.
Sunday evening sees talks between US and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. Russia will hold talks with the US on Monday with difficult negotiations. The US is also hindered by having an inexperienced team where people neither have political or military experience.
The US envoy, Steve Witkoff has dismissed Starmer’s planned for an international force to support the ceasefire proposals during an interview with Tucker Carlson. Instead he said he liked Putin and didn't record him as a bad guy and said that he was super smart and gracious. He also said that the meeting that Putin had commissioned a portrait of Trump as a gift and gave it to him.
Further comments during the interview with Witkoff had him saying that Ukraine was a false country and said that the world should recognise occupied Ukrainian territory as Russian. This is mere parenting of Russian propaganda and as an official US special envoy it is hard to trust them during negotiations when they have displayed pro Kremlin narratives, and from a man who is leading the US negotiations. He further claimed that the partially occupied territories in Ukraine had held referendums where people said they wanted to be under Russian rule. This is untrue and any referendum is held were under duress and the results have been discredited and disputed. While many people do speak Russian in those areas it does not mean that they necessarily support Russian rule. He further claims that the occupied regions were rightfully part of Russia since World War II and were reclaiming them.
In Saudi Arabia meetings will take place between Ukraine and the US on 24 March 2025. On the same day, the US representatives will also meet with a Russian delegation.
